It houses oldest carvings in Granite. Looking back to the history, the town is named after demon Mahabali who was killed by Lord Vishnu. Mahabalipuram was quondam port of Pallava. The city's name literally means 'city of great Bali'. Later the town was under the rule of Pallavas in 7th and 8th centuries. The Pallava King Narasimhavarman I named the city 'Mamallapuram which means 'city of great wrestler'. Even today, the port city is known as Mamallapuram.vhbgn
